Barcode quiet zones
The quiet zone is the empty light margin around a barcode. The scanner needs it to find where the symbol starts and ends. Text, lines, the label edge or another barcode inside it are among the most common reasons a barcode prints fine but does not scan.
Minimum quiet zone per symbology
Quiet zones are specified in modules (X): multiples of the narrowest bar or smallest square.
| Symbology | Left | Right | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| EAN-13 | 11 X | 7 X | GS1 General Specifications |
| EAN-8 | 7 X | 7 X | GS1 General Specifications |
| UPC-A | 9 X | 9 X | GS1 General Specifications |
| UPC-E | 9 X | 7 X | GS1 General Specifications |
| Code 128, GS1-128 | 10 X | 10 X | ISO/IEC 15417, GS1 General Specifications |
| ITF-14, ITF | 10 X | 10 X | GS1 General Specifications, ISO/IEC 16390 |
| Code 39 | 10 X | 10 X | ISO/IEC 16388 |
| Code 93 | 10 X | 10 X | AIM USS Code 93 |
| QR Code | 4 X on all four sides | ISO/IEC 18004 | |
| Micro QR | 2 X on all four sides | ISO/IEC 18004 | |
| Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix | 1 X on all four sides | ISO/IEC 16022 | |
| PDF417 | 2 X on all four sides | ISO/IEC 15438 | |
| Aztec | none required | ISO/IEC 24778 |
These are minimums. More is always fine, and many label guidelines ask for more.
From modules to mm and dots
quiet zone in mm = modules × module width (mm)
quiet zone in dots = modules × module width in dots (^BY)
Example: an EAN-13 with a module width of 0.33 mm needs 11 × 0.33 = 3.63 mm on the left and 7 × 0.33 = 2.31 mm on the right. In ZPL with ^BY3 (3 dots per module) it needs 11 × 3 = 33 dots on the left and 7 × 3 = 21 dots on the right.
Quiet zones in ZPL
ZPL draws only the bars. The free space around them is up to you: keep the ^FO position of the barcode at least the quiet zone away from the label edge and from other fields. Our ZPL Viewer shows exactly where each bar lands, so you can check the distances.
Typical mistakes
- Human-readable text or a box line placed into the margin.
- Barcode positioned too close to the label edge, or cut by the die-cut edge after a small print shift.
- Two barcodes side by side without enough space between them.
- A dark or patterned background running up to the bars.
